‘Should I leave my child in nursery in August, or should they attend Summer School?’ We get asked this question by parents with children starting Reception in September. It can be a tricky one as we are all used to the long hours provided by nurseries and the childcare cover which we all crave during the long summer holiday weeks. I get it, I once had this dilemma some years back.
Children starting Reception in September benefit greatly from attending a structured school setting before they start main school in September. Schools organise settling in days, which is great, but these can only give our children a taster of the inevitable which is very different to a nursery setting that accommodates afternoon naps, free play, and minimal formal learning.
Thinking back, I am glad I made the right decision for my son in 2014 and daughter in 2017 by enrolling them for Summer School which made the transition into Reception smoother.
